Happy Mardi Gras

Welcome to the New Orleans of Susanna Marcasi in “Blood Stripe.”

Happy Mardi Gras. This 1939 image stands in contrast to a world at war, as nations tugged at a neutral United States for its support or continued isolation.

The black-and-white photos show Mardi Gras, New Orleans, early 20th century. Some things (thankfully) never change. It is “Fat Tuesday,” the last day before we (Ca’licks) enter the austere days of Lent.

So, rip open your shirt and shout, “Throw me sumptin’, mistah.” It’s Mardi Gras. But remember Ash Wednesday begins at midnight. These ten days of frivolity and decadence cease.
